DO I NEED TO GET VACCINATED?
Seasonal influenza is a disease which mostly arises as we enter the cooler months. The flu vaccination programme runs from the end of September into the winter months when instances of flu are highest. Health authorities modify the vaccination yearly to accommodate changes in the virus. Therefore, getting a yearly booster is the best way to keep yourself and your loved ones protected. You’ll know all too well that COVID-19 has meant that the past few winters have been a bit different to normal, with social distancing and masks still a big factor in our lives. This means that for the past few years, fewer of us have contracted seasonal influenza so the population is facing less immunity this year than usual. Getting vaccinated gives your immune system the best chance to produce viral antibodies that can prevent serious illness if you come in contact with flu viruses this winter. If you are a frontline worker or have a vulnerable loved one, consider getting vaccinated to keep others safe.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR THE NHS FLU VACCINE?
You can get the free NHS flu vaccine if you:
- are aged 65 or over (including if you will be 65 by 31 March 2024)
- have certain long-term health conditions
- are pregnant
- live in a care home
- are the main carer for an older or disabled person, or receive a carer’s allowance
- live with someone who has a weakened immune system
Frontline health and social care workers can also get a flu vaccine through their employer.
WHO CANNOT HAVE THE FLU VACCINE?
The majority of people who are eligible for the flu vaccine are suitable candidates for vaccination.
However, if you have experienced a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to a previous dose of the vaccine or an ingredient in the vaccine, you should not receive it.
It’s important to note that certain flu vaccines administered in the UK may contain egg protein. If you have an egg allergy, please inform the person administering the vaccine.
